Hope for Every Heart
Hope For Every Heart was founded by Steven Gashumba in Africa. As a child who grew up in deep villages of Uganda, Steven knows what it means to live without the basic necessities for everyday life like food, clean water, shelter, health and education.
Growing up he had 14 brothers and sisters; he remembers how his mother used to serve food on one big plate called” lusayina”. Sometimes they could also have nothing to eat. Unfortunately, Steven lost 5 of his brothers due to lack of medical care, one was 20 years old, another one was 15 and other 3 were still babies. They lived in a bush, the hospital was miles away and transport was unavailable. Steven’s mother gave birth to all her children without any medical help or attention.
As a young boy, Steven was privileged to attend school; however the school was 10 miles away, so he could walk 20 miles to and from school. He remembers he went to school at 12 years old, he wasn’t supposed to go to school but when he had gone to fetch water, he had children singing and decided to go and check out. The next day his father took him to school.
At school, they nicknamed him a Luganda name”Lurira Mu’nyana” literally meaning a big cow feeding with the little ones because he was much older than other children.
Steven also remembers the first time he wore the pair of shoes at the age of 18 but prior to that he walked everywhere deep in the jungle and also walking 20 miles of back and forth school with barefoot.
